The question when that happens always is, of course, will it actually have staying power?
The latest and greatest craze to capture the internet’s attention is BeReal, a new photo-sharing app that hopes to bring authenticity back to internet selfies.

What is BeReal?
BeReal is a French social media app released in 2020. It was developed by Alexis Barreyat and Kevin Perreau. After a couple of years of relative obscurity, it gained popularity rapidly in early and mid-2022.
Its main feature is a daily notification that encourages users to share a photo of themselves and their immediate surroundings given a randomly selected two-minute window every day. Critics noted its emphasis on authenticity, which some felt crossed the line into mundanity.
The app was developed by Alexis Barreyat, a former employee of GoPro, and Kevin Perreau. It gained popularity in early and mid-2022. It spread widely first on college campuses, partially due to a paid ambassador program.
By April, it had been downloaded over 6.8 million times, with the majority of the downloads coming in 2022.
In August 2022, BeReal was the most downloaded app in Germany.
In April 2022, BeReal received a $30 million funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Accel.
In May 2022, BeReal secured $85 million in a funding round led by Yuri Milner‘s DST Global, increasing its valuation to about $600 million.
As of July 2022, the app had over 20 million estimated global installs.
As of the 25th of August, the application has over 10 million active daily users.
What time is BeReal going to ask for a photo?
That’s the catch with this particular social media app. BeReal doesn’t have any single set time that will prompt its users to take photos. In fact, it changes every single day. The only constant is that it will prompt a user twice a day, but that time could vary completely. For example, you could post at 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. on one day, and then be asked to post at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. the next. This air of surprise leans heavily on BeReal’s mission to be as authentic as possible.
Why are my BeReal posts not uploading?
Chalk it up to growing pains, because some vocal users on Reddit have shared that BeReal is being less than cooperative when it comes time for them to share their photos. The creators of the app have not directly addressed slow upload times, but considering BeReal’s almost-overnight explosion in popularity any lags can likely be attributed to the company’s servers attempting to keep up with such a massive influx of new users.
Nonetheless, only time will tell if BeReal is just another fad or if it truly revolutionizes how we perceive sharing images of ourselves online. One thing is certain, though, being on BeReal will likely reveal a side of you that a manicured Instagram profile could never fully convey.
