1. Who is Guaynaa?

Guaynaa is a Puerto Rican rapper and singer who is currently signed to American music label Universal Music Latino.

He gained fame due to the success of his song “Rebota”, which reached number 35 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart in April 2019 and has received over 500 million views on YouTube.

He was nominated for Best Reggaeton Performance for his song “Chicharrón” featuring Cauty at the Latin Grammys 2020.

2. How did Guaynaa get famous?

Guaynaa had his first taste of fame in 2017, when he recorded a freestyle about life after hurricane María in Puerto Rico and it went viral. It expressed exactly what so many Puerto Ricans wanted to say about the neglect they felt the months after the hurricane destroyed the island. His popularity grew, and he began creating a fanbase on social media. That’s when he said to himself “ok, ahora llegó el momento de darle,” and he shifted his goals towards music.

“That’s when I realized I had a real opportunity to be an artist,” Guaynaa said. He left behind a career in Chemical Engineering, and a stable job at an oil refinery, but that first year he felt he sacrificed all for nothing. “I didn’t know what I was doing. I just had a gift to write and improvise,” he added. Little by little he surrounded himself with the right people, who guided him in the right direction towards building the career he had imagined.

Guaynaa reflected that releasing “ReBoTa” as his first single for people to get to know him was an initiative from his management team, versus including him in a remix by another artist and take it from there. He doesn’t take for granted the fact that he gained so much success and popularity thanks to his own song, as not a lot of artists these days have that privilege.

This opened the doors for him to feature top Latin artists in his own remix of this song, with none other than Nicky Jam, Farruko, Becky G, and Sech joining him for an all-star hit that make people want to perrear even harder.

His following singles, “Buyaka,” “Chicharrón” feat. Cauty, “Full Moon,” feat. Yandel, and “Rompe Rodillas” continued positioning him as a respected artist within el género and are all included in the EP, along with his newest release “Mera,” as well as a special collaboration with Rafa Pabón called “El Bibí.”

“I want this EP to make people happy. I want everyone to take these songs and create beautiful memories with them,” Guaynaa said. “I want them to perrear, to enjoy, to laugh, to have fun with it, to feel that warmth that brings us together.”

3. How did Guaynaa get his name?

While he stylizes it as “Guaynaa” the term “guayna” is a common abbreviation of the word “guaynabicho,” a Puerto Rican slang term that refers to residents of the city of Guaynabo. Folks from there have a reputation (warranted or not) of being snobby, superficial, and high-class. Guaynaa himself was born in Caguas and raised between Carolina and Canóvanas, but due to his extroverted personality and sense of style he was often called a “guayna” by friends.

He once rapped under a different name.

Years before his “María” freestyle debut, Guaynaa made an initial attempt at breaking into the music scene in 2015. Under the moniker Janko (a play on his name, Jean Carlos), he released two music videos in which he leaned into a malianteo persona. “I signed with a label called Real Music and tried to do the style I’d see in other artists instead of being myself, [but] it didn’t really work out and I stopped making music like that.” When asked who he identified with most, bad boy Janko or mischievous Guaynaa, he replied, “Definitely Guaynaa, he’s closer to who Jean Carlos really is.”

4. He started music at a younger age by entertaining himself, his family, and friends.

Guaynaa’s grandfather was a trovador, but until he was born, no one else in his family dabbled in music. Around the age of 10, he started to entertain himself and his friends by writing songs and performing. “In the beginning we would just [improvise] spontaneous lyrics, mostly reggaetón,” he tells Remezcla over the phone. He credits listening to popular artists in his youth as inspiring him to always be “rapping and freestyling” with his friends.

He wanted to become a jockey

Before pursuing a musical career, he was working as a phone salesman in a mall. He was going to become a petrochemical engineer before working in music

After graduating from high school, Guaynaa started college in Puerto Rico and joined the school’s baseball team before shifting to equestrianism, a decision he attributes to peaking early in college baseball.

“I’ve always liked racing horses, and one day I had a great game — I struck out 16 of 21 batters — and said, ‘That’s enough; I don’t want to do this anymore, I want to race horses,’ and switched sports.” He spent four years in Boston trying to make it as a jockey, but ultimately decided to withdraw. “I had trouble making the necessary weight, so eventually I just decided to leave it,” he says. He moved back to Puerto Rico where he began to study chemical engineering with his eyes on a degree.

Jean Carlos Santiago Pérez always stood out among his friends.

Guaynaa was an exceptional person even among his friends when growing up.

“I was always surrounded by rappers, or friends that dressed up like rappers,” he said. So, they began calling him “el Guaynabito” or Guaynaa as a way to make fun of him because he looked like he lived in Guaynabo. “Guaynabo is an area in Puerto Rico where — according to the island’s sayings — the rich people live,” Guaynaa explained.
