Is TLC’s sMothered A Scripted Show?

What is the dark truth behind sMothered? The TLC mother-daughter show rumored to be fake and not real.

SMothered just dropped its second season on TLC, and since the reality show’s plot of following outrageous mother-daughter duos is so bizarre, it’s not much of a surprise that with every new episode there are more and more questions raised about the series and its not-so-normal cast. The latest? Viewers want to know if sMothered is scripted like many other reality shows out there. Scroll down for everything we know about the truth behind the show!

Is ‘sMothered’ on TLC scripted?

While TLC has not come out and explicitly said that the show is scripted, there are a lot of theories surfacing on the internet that the show may be fake, especially because of the casting process.

The previous show follows a few mother-daughter pairs, including Kathy and Cristina, Sunhe and Angelica, Dawn and Cher, Mary and Brittani, Marcia and Alena, and Laurie and Sara, all of whom likely got on the series through an open casting call.

The casting page for the network reads: “Do you have an over-the-top and EXTREMELY CLOSE relationship with your mom or daughter? Is your mom or daughter your best friend and one another’s entire world? Do you take the traditional mom and daughter relationship to new heights? Do you and your mom/daughter live, work and/or travel together? Do you two literally do EVERYTHING together? Do you do things together that your friends wouldn’t do with their moms/daughters?”

The prompt for sMothered continues: “Are you closer with your mom/daughter than friends or family members and sometimes even spouses and significant others? If YES, we want to hear from you! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put you and your mom/daughter’s incredible bond center stage and have the time of your life!”

However, there is currently an active Instagram account called @smotheredisfake that posts about what they think are fake aspects of the show. “I am an aspiring student investigative journalist and found sMothered @tlc is scripted-based on created by

Although this is not a legit source by any means, between claiming that certain cast members are actresses, that the way they act on the series is “crap,” and investigating the truth about their past, this account, which was 280 followers, has caused fans to question the authenticity of the show on Reddit as well.

“I believe it’s true to a degree, but some things are so obviously fake that it makes it hard to watch,” one user wrote.

“I read some posts on Instagram calling the show fake. It’s not too convincing but right now I’m watching it thinking hmmmm,” another added. “Everyone who witnesses the things the moms/daughters do act way too shocked and say ‘they’re taking it to far’ or ‘this is too much’ like they’ve never done these things before. You’d think if they always had this wild relationship people wouldn’t be so shocked or so pissed.”

The truth behind the show will probably never truly come out, but whether it’s scripted or not, it sure is both ridiculous and entertaining at the same time.
